Small changes at home can make falls less likely. Tick each one off as you go.

  • Remove throw rugs, or tape them firmly down
  • Clear shoes, cords and clutter from walkways
  • Arrange furniture so paths are wide and clear

Lighting

  • Put night lights between the bedroom and bathroom
  • Keep a lamp or flashlight within reach of the bed
  • Have light switches at the top and bottom of stairs

Bathroom

  • Install grab bars by the toilet and in the shower
  • Use a non-slip mat in the tub or shower
  • Consider a shower chair

Stairs

  • Have sturdy handrails on both sides
  • Make step edges easy to see

You

  • Get your eyes checked every year
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines that cause dizziness or sleepiness
  • Wear supportive shoes with non-slip soles, even at home
  • Get up slowly after sitting or lying down
  • Keep your phone with you so you can call for help
